Margaret Foreman lived with her mother in Canterbury before moving to Broadstairs. Margaret and her mother bought Flint House twenty years ago. Margaret married Martin Cheek in 1987. They have two children, Thomas and Mollie and the Cheek family now live at Flint House. Broadstairs is a quiet town on the Kent coast between Margate and Ramsgate on the Isle of Thanet. It is sometimes referred to as the Jewel in Thanet's Crown. It is also known by the translation of the town crest motto Stella Maris - Star of the Sea. There is quite a lot of history associated with the area, smuggling was prevalent for many years and of course Charles Dickens lived and wrote here. In Roman times the Isle of Thanet was indeed an island, being separated from mainland Kent by the Wantsum Channel. The Romans actually built forts at each end of the channel, Reculver to the north and Richborough to the south. For those interested in our local history, there is a web site with a local history section, the town also has it's own official web site, which has a lot of interesting information about the area and a town trail walk which takes you around some of the most interesting parts of the town. There are a number of bays in and around Broadstairs, all of which are sandy and safe for children, although only Botany, Joss and Viking Bays have lifeguards. Our nearest beach is Viking Bay, a mere two minute walk from Flint House, as can be seen from the photograph opposite, which shows Flint House in the centre. For the school summer holiday period there is (weather permitting) a traditional Punch & Judy show on Viking Bay. Each year over Viking Bay, during the summer holiday period, there is a firework display once a week, if the wind is not too strong! Being a very picturesque place, film crews sometimes use the various bays around Broadstairs. For example James Nesbit (star of Cold Feet) was at Viking Bay filming recently. |
