Beginners Mosaic Courses With Martin Cheek This 2-day course provides a great foundation for the mosaic beginner, but there is so much information that most people come back time after time. Martin will take you through the mosaic creative process one step at a time, way beyond the naive concept of ‘crazy paving’ and ‘colouring in’ with broken tiles. Lots of different mosaic materials will be covered, and via an hour long slide show of Martin’s own work, he will show you how the various materials affect your finished piece. Martin will teach cutting, shaping techniques and classical laying techniques of the tesserae from first principles. He will also introduce you to the old master techniques of andamento, opus regulatum, vermiculatum, musivum etc. You will then get to experiment with these techniques whilst completing your own mosaic design. Please bring with you at least two design ideas to discuss with Martin. A size of around A4 (20 cm x 30 cm) in area is recommended for your first mosaic. You can work on wood or mesh. Martin will show you how you can 'build up' a design by making various elements 'close up' on mesh and then incorporating them into a bigger design. How to choose your colours and your grout in terms of their tonal values and their effect on your design will also be covered. See Martin’s latest work on his website: |
