Peter Murphy - A Profile
Born in Leeds in 1959, educated at Jacob Kramer College of Art and the University of East London, Peter Murphy trained with noted iconographer Guillem Ramos Poqui in London in the 1980s. He has been painting for church and private patrons ever since. He is a gifted lecturer and has tutored painting workshops in the UK, Italy and Greece.
In recent years Peter Murphy has undertaken several prestigious commissions for a number of churches in the UK, notably Tewkesbury Abbey and the church of St Mary Redcliffe in Bristol. A number of museums have also utilised the unique skills of Peter Murphy to create special exhibitions and permanent features. In 1998 the artist recreated a triptych by Simone Martini for the Barber Institute of Fine Arts.
Peter Murphy utilises traditional early medieval techniques and materials such as gold leaf and egg tempera to create beautiful and authentic religious images.
Recently Peter Murphy has been painting iconic portraits of music legends. Fusing traditional styles, techniques and formats with radically new material to create a truly original oeuvre.
